When is the best time of year to catch (fill in the blank) fish? That’s one of our most common questions and we built a page just for it! This page shows seasonal information about each fish we can catch out of Port Canaveral. This guide combines Sea Leveler’s detailed catch records and fishing reports with Captain Greg’s 30+ years of local fishing experience. Select Offshore, Nearshore or Long Range and then select the fish you want to view.

The season at a glance…

Whiting are possible year-round along Port Canaveral’s sandy ocean-side beach areas. Our trip records show stronger opportunities in winter and early spring, especially December and February–March. Calm enough surf, moving water, and the captain’s choice of fishing area influence opportunities throughout the year.

Seasonal strength: 1 = lower opportunity · 5 = stronger opportunity · Closed = seasonal closure shown in our calendar, however regulations change and closures can happen earlier after catch quotas are filled. Ratings compare months for each fish. They are not catch percentages or guarantees.

Based on Sea Leveler’s catch records, fishing reports, and Captain Greg’s 30+ years of experience fishing Port Canaveral. Weather, water conditions, and bait movement affect the bite each day. Harvest regulations can change; your captain confirms what may be kept.

01

Setting the Bait

The captain positions the boat along a calmer beach edge and shows you how to cast a small shrimp or sand-flea bait so it settles on the sandy bottom.

02

Feeling the Bite

A whiting may tap lightly before pulling steadily once hooked. You follow the captain’s coaching and reel it toward the boat on light tackle. Pompano, croakers, or small drum may take the same rig.

03

At the Boat

The captain identifies and handles your catch, then checks whether it can be harvested. He helps rebait the rig so you can cast again while the fish are feeding.
Whiting can give beginners and children a chance to feel bites and reel in fish on light tackle. A small shrimp or sand flea on sandy bottom can bring whiting along with other beach fish, and they’re good eating when we harvest them. — Capt Greg
