Red Drum seasons and fishing opportunities
Red drum are possible year-round in Port Canaveral’s ocean-side nearshore waters. Our trip records show the strongest opportunities from late October through January, with November and December standing out. February can also be productive, while opportunities are less consistent through spring and summer. Storms and swell can delay or disrupt the fall schooling pattern. All local red drum must be released under current rules.
Seasonal opportunity: 1 = lowest, 5 = highest for this fish. Closed months are marked separately. Ratings are not catch guarantees.
These ratings combine Sea Leveler’s trip records and fishing reports with Captain Greg’s 30+ years of local fishing experience. Captain Greg has more experience than any other captain currently running charter trips out of Port Canaveral.

Fishing techniques
Large live or cut bait for bull reds; lighter tackle or shrimp when conditions suit.
Ideal conditions
Fishable wind and water along the ocean beach, outside jetties, Canaveral Bight, or shoal edges, with suitable bait and feeding fish. Storms can scatter schools and bait.
What the experience is like
Setting the Baits
The captain chooses an ocean-side beach, shoal edge, or outside-jetty area and prepares bait and tackle for the fish there. When targeting bull reds, you may leave a live or cut bait in position while waiting for a bite.
The Bite and Fight
When you feel a powerful pull, you follow the captain’s coaching and begin reeling. You keep pressure on the fish while letting the drag work through its runs. Other nearshore fish, including sharks, may also take the bait.
At the Boat
The captain lands and handles the fish, then releases it. Red drum fishing around Port Canaveral is catch and release under current regional rules.
Captain Greg’s take
We can pursue bull reds on a Family Fun trip when that’s what customers want and conditions line up. The schools often gather later in October, and the late fall and winter pattern can give us good opportunities. Storms can move the fish and bait around, so the captain chooses where and how to fish that day.
