Wahoo seasons and fishing opportunities

Wahoo are possible year-round but remain a rare catch on regular offshore trips. Our ratings show modestly better opportunities in April, June, and August–November.

Seasonal opportunity: 1 = lowest, 5 = highest for this fish. Closed months are marked separately. Ratings are not catch guarantees.

These ratings combine Sea Leveler’s trip records and fishing reports with Captain Greg’s 30+ years of local fishing experience. Captain Greg has more experience than any other captain currently running charter trips out of Port Canaveral.

Fishing techniques

High-speed trolling offshore edges, trolling rigged ballyhoo through blue water, and occasionally slow trolling live or dead bait.

Ideal conditions

Clean blue water with bait around offshore edges, current breaks, or temperature changes. The water conditions and the captain’s route matter more than a particular calendar month.

What the experience is like

The Strike

A wahoo may hit a trolling bait while the captain is fishing for a mix of offshore species. He may also pull high-speed lures while moving between areas when the route and water look promising. The strike can be sudden, with line racing off the reel.

The Fight

You take the rod and follow the captain’s coaching as the fish makes its fast runs. Let it take line when it’s pulling drag, then lift smoothly and reel down when you can gain line. The captain keeps the boat positioned to help you through the fight.

At the Boat

The captain handles the sharp-toothed fish at boatside and puts a legal keeper on ice. A wahoo is an exciting addition to the offshore catch and an excellent fish to bring home for dinner.

Captain Greg’s take

A wahoo is a great surprise on an offshore trip. That first run gets everyone’s attention, and they’re delicious fish to bring home. I’d rather keep you fishing for a good mix of species than spend the whole day high-speed trolling for an occasional wahoo. There can be a lot of riding between bites with that approach. When one hits while we’re working the offshore bite, it’s an exciting bonus!
