Goliath Grouper seasons and fishing opportunities
Goliath grouper offer a year-round catch-and-release opportunity when location and conditions allow. Our seasonal ratings show stronger opportunities from April–July, with May–July highest. These ratings describe catching opportunities, not a harvest season.
Seasonal opportunity: 1 = lowest, 5 = highest for this fish. Closed months are marked separately. Ratings are not catch guarantees.
These ratings combine Sea Leveler’s trip records and fishing reports with Captain Greg’s 30+ years of local fishing experience. Captain Greg has more experience than any other captain currently running charter trips out of Port Canaveral.

Fishing techniques
Heavy tackle and live bait fished close to reefs or other structure.
Ideal conditions
Reefs or other structure where goliaths are holding, with conditions that allow the captain to position the boat and present a large bait effectively.
What the experience is like
Setting the Bait
The captain positions the boat beside nearshore reefs or other structure where a goliath may be holding. He prepares heavy tackle with live bait and explains how to hold the rod and respond when the fish bites.
The Bite and Fight
When the rod loads up, you apply pressure immediately under the captain’s direction to keep the fish from getting back into structure. At first, it can feel like you’re pulling against the bottom. Once the fish moves, you work against its weight and power, with the captain helping manage the rod and boat.
At the Boat
The captain keeps the fish in the water and handles the release. A quick boatside look or photo may be possible without delaying its return. Seeing a fish that large beside the boat is an exciting finish to the fight.
Captain Greg’s take
We usually target goliaths nearshore, around reefs or other structure. Getting a goliath to bite and getting it away from the structure are two different challenges. When we find them holding in the right spot, getting a hookup can be fairly straightforward. Then you find out just how powerful they are! The captain helps you work through the fight, and seeing that giant beside the boat is the reward before it swims away.
