Captain Greg's Fishing Report for May 2024
Port Canaveral, Cape Canaveral, Cocoa Beach, and Orlando
We are so excited for May. Everything leading up to this month points to awesome fishing when you commit to a full day of fishing.
I’m going to focus 100% on the offshore report and I will talk a little about the nearshore fishing in the Infographic.
Go deep, for all things good this month get outside of 100ft. Groupers open up this month and with the amount of gags we have been catching on accident in April, we are expecting fireworks with 2 gag limits being pretty easy to obtain. The deep deep water beyond 160 to 240ft hasn’t been bothered with in over a month with amberjacks and other deep water species being closed. This means the best tasting grouper of them all the scamp grouper will be abundant. Where there’s amberjacks there is always grouper. If you can figure out some tricks to fish through the amberjack you will catch gags.
Rough seas that shut us down for a few days will make for good mahi fishing if your the first back out on the water. The reason being is more defined edges happen when dirty water is present and the wind will tend to push seaweed from the East side of the Gulf Stream and hopefully some mahi also.
Half Day & 3/4 Day trips will be a grind with a slow pick of king mackerel with the ever so occasional mahi, cobia or sailfish. Catching and releasing red snapper, sandbar sharks and goliath grouper will be a good options for those just looking for action and pictures.
May is still a prime mine for the tuna trips so look for weather windows Monday through Thursday and use your sick days wisely. Sucks riding 100 miles to trip over 10 other boats chasing down the same pack of tuna.
May is the best month of the year for the serious angler who wants to put in a long day for a awesome catch.
