Fishing in October

Fall fishing follows the bait.

October can bring excellent nearshore fishing as the fall mullet run draws predators along the beach. Sharks, tarpon, snook, red drum, jack crevalle, bluefish, and Spanish mackerel may join the action around the bait schools. Offshore opportunities depend heavily on water clarity and recent tropical swell. When the water stays clear, king mackerel, bonito, barracuda, and the broader offshore mix remain possible. Mahi can also be caught on regular offshore trips if they come back around in October, but that return is unpredictable.

October usually brings a gradual break from summer’s heat and humidity, with warm afternoons and more comfortable mornings. Early October can still feel like summer, while later in the month may bring cooler mornings and breezier days. It often feels cooler on the water than in the city or theme parks. Afternoon showers generally become less frequent as the month progresses, although tropical activity can still influence the weather and ocean conditions.

Sea conditions

October can offer beautiful, settled days, but increasing winds and lingering tropical swell can affect the ocean. A distant Atlantic storm can send swell toward Port Canaveral without a local landfall. Water clarity can remain affected after the seas calm down, so recent ocean conditions matter as much as the weather on your trip day. Stretches of calm water can allow the clearer-water offshore pattern to continue or return.

What to wear

Be ready for hot or cool weather—October is one of Florida’s bipolar months. Wear light, comfortable clothing, with a long-sleeve sun shirt and shorts or light pants. Bring a sweatshirt or light wind-resistant jacket you can put on for cooler mornings or breezy trips. Wear secure shoes with good grip, and bring sunglasses, a hat, and sun protection.

Nearshore fishing is a strong October choice when the mullet run is active. Following the bait schools can produce exciting mixed-species fishing, making Nearshore / Family Fun and shark trips especially appealing. Offshore, a Half Day or ¾ Day can work very well when clear water and productive fishing are nearby. If recent swell has stirred up the grounds, a Full Day gives us more time to search farther out, troll blue water, and explore deeper bottom-fishing areas. Mahi may also offer a worthwhile opportunity if a fall push develops. October generally has more booking flexibility than summer. — Capt Greg

Half Day Offshore

For offshore action when the water stays clear

Half-day offshore trips can be excellent in October when clear water and productive fishing remain around 10–15 miles from the port. King mackerel, bonito, and barracuda can provide trolling action, with occasional cobia, blackfin tuna, or sailfish in the mix. Mahi can also be caught on regular offshore trips if they come back around in October, but that return is unpredictable.

Weather conditions

Recent tropical swell can affect water clarity even after the seas settle. Shorter offshore trips work best when the better fishing is within reach.

A ¾ Day gives you more time to enjoy a productive bite when the water is clear nearby. A nine-hour Full Day adds room to search farther offshore, troll blue water, and explore deeper bottom-fishing grounds. King mackerel, bonito, and barracuda may provide action closer in. Farther out, sailfish, incidental blackfin tuna, or wahoo may join the catch. Mahi can also be caught on regular offshore trips if they come back around in October, but that return is unpredictable. Deeper bottom fishing can offer grouper, snapper, amberjack, almaco jack, or triggerfish.

Weather conditions

After a large tropical swell, the Full Day provides the most flexibility offshore. A defined edge between dirty and clear blue water can create a productive trolling opportunity. Bottom fishing in the usual depths can also be affected, so reaching deeper grounds may help.

Nearshore / Family Fun

October can be an outstanding month for Nearshore / Family Fun when schools of finger mullet bring the beach to life. Jack crevalle, ladyfish, bluefish, Spanish mackerel, red drum, snook, flounder, and mangrove snapper may join the action. The captain follows the bait and helps everyone get involved, giving kids and first-time anglers a chance to enjoy the excitement of fall fishing close to shore.

Weather conditions

The mix changes with the bait schools and recent conditions. Sharks and tarpon may also feed around the mullet; pursuing larger fish depends on the booked trip and your group. Some nearshore trips may offer a separate Goliath grouper catch-and-release opportunity.

Shark Fishing

For sharks following the fall mullet run

October’s bait schools can draw sharks along the beach, making a dedicated shark trip an exciting fall choice. The captain anchors in a promising area and puts out large baits while your group waits for the reel to sound. A variety of species and sizes is possible, from smaller sharks to larger fish that deliver a demanding fight.

Weather conditions

Large tropical swell can disrupt the bite, but shark fishing often recovers faster than offshore fishing once the ocean settles. Recent bait activity helps the captain choose where to fish.

For a long-range adventure when the bite lines up

A dedicated yellowfin trip aboard Sea Trident takes you to the other side of the Gulf Stream. The captain uses radar to search for feeding bird packs, then works promising activity with large trolling lures. Mahi or blackfin tuna may also be encountered during the search.

A second push of mahi sometimes develops in October. A dedicated trip aboard Sea Trident gives the captain more time to search clean blue water, weed lines, floating debris, and current edges. Finding a productive piece of debris or a school can turn a stretch of searching into an exciting series of bites.

Mahi sometimes come back around in October, but their return is unpredictable. When they do, they can also be caught on regular offshore trips. A dedicated mahi trip provides more time to search; recent fishing reports help determine whether it’s a good choice.

Head north toward St. Augustine for a dedicated long-range bottom-fishing trip, targeting offshore structure for grouper, snapper, amberjack and almaco jack. The species mix depends on conditions and open harvest seasons.

Weather conditions

The right weather window and an active bottom bite can make this a rewarding trip. Fishing is less consistent during these months, and gag grouper closures may limit the keeper options.
